Chīsai sushi club gives off a modern trendy sushi vibe. It's a small little restaurant with counter and table seating available. There was lively music playing in the background but at times, it does get a little hard to hear the convo. Excellent customer service. We came a little before our reservation and were greeted immediately as we entered the restaurant. We ordered the buckwheat tea for the table and the server made sure to constantly add hot water to the pot. Fish was melt in your mouth with unique flavor pairings. My favorite bite of the night was the scallop with foie gras butter. It was soft, buttery and sweet! For supplement, our table ordered the uni carbonara and this was a little disappointing. The bacon flavor overpowers the uni and it the sauce is not as creamy as I liked it. My mom got the vegan option and she quite like her first omakase experience. A lot of textures and different preparations methods for each ingredient. Reservation highly recommended since it was pretty packed on a Thursday night. Parking is pretty limited in the area so definitely allocate extra time for it. Overall, the omakase experience was pretty good but I do wish that I got the counter seating. Everything was decent but nothing really wowed or surprised me. Probably won't be visiting again but I'm glad that I gave this a place a try and checked it off my bookmark list.
Fantastic! Wonderful customer service, the dishes were inventive yet staying true to Japanese cuisine. The yuzu sake is a must. This place will take you on a magical journey, every dish hit it out of the park. Definitely will be back!
Really liked the spot! Great bang for your buck if you're looking for a Omakase spot in the city! We did their $95 per person Omakase and were pretty full by the end of it all, really unique flavor combinations, and the service at the bar was great!
I've been wanting to try this unassuming hole in the wall sushi spot and glad we did! Got a reservation on NYE, it was a fancy yet low key vibe inside. Enjoyed their playlist. I got the omakase, really enjoyed the nigiri. There was only one hand roll, I wish there was another. Food was great and fish was tasty but for the price I wasn't completely wowed.
Tried this small, intimate sushi restaurant for the first time last night NYE. I thought they did well overall! It was a good experience. The prices are on the higher side so we opted for the omakase. I thought the highlight for sure was the 9 pc nigiri! Pretty awesome flavors If you ask me. The rest of the food was ok but did not WOW. Overall it missed a opportunity to show something unique but the simplicity and flavor was there. 4.5/5 FOOD 4/5 AMBIANCE 5/5 SERVICE
I went here with my husband for dinner back in October. Yes, I'm not the best at posting things on time but I'm going to work on that! Everything was soooooo good! We both got the chisai omakase, and one of my faves was the salmon nigiri with nori butter. The hint of salt under the butter was a really nice touch, too! I wish I could just have an entire plate of that nigiri! We also got a separate order of wagyu with uni- delicious!! The desert was really cute and that night it was one of my fave ice cream flavors, Earl Grey. I'm going to assume they make the ice cream as it's not a common flavor for purchase at any store. The staff was friendly, understanding and accommodating to my tardiness for my reservation- we just flew in a couple hours before our reservation, and even though we got a Lyft ride confirmed, when he was just a block away from us, the driver cancelled on us! We had already waited almost fifteen minutes for him too! So we got another driver but the new driver was also about fifteen minutes away. So the text option with the staff was very helpful and reassuring for me during that situation that I wouldn't loose my reservation spot. Atmosphere is cozy/intimate as the size of the restaurant is smaller, but with music for what seemed like a younger generation at a club to make it more of a casual, fun vibe, Despite the smaller size, it was wondrous for me to see how everyone worked and maneuvered around one another so smoothly and effortlessly. Our sushi chef that night, I believe his name is Wan (I'm sorry, I can't remember for sure, forgive me!) was so nice and informative and smiling the entire night, just overall positive vibes from him. Everything was prepared and presented nicely and he would tell us what each dish was. All the dishes we received that night was so unique and innovative and delicious, with their own different sauces lightly poured on top. I think my husbands eyes rolled up to the back of his head with every dish because he thought it was so good! Definitely a spot to hit up if you're in the area for some unique nigiri! It's not your typical, standard kind that you just dip in soy sauce, and that's a really welcome, and good change!!
(4.5 stars) Chisai Sushi Club is a cozy, intimate spot perfect for a date night. I tried the $95 omakase--good value for SF--and every dish was well crafted. It started with a refreshing crab salad, followed by tangy, spicy ponzu sauce based albacore, and three courses of melt-in-your-mouth nigiri, with fish sourced from Canada, Japan, and Norway. The sea bream and cod were highlights. A spicy tuna hand roll and homemade elderflower ice cream rounded out the meal perfectly. Chisai also offers a vegan omakase. Overall really good sushi and attentive service too.
Memorable evening sitting at the bar while watching the chef make our sushi. You can opt for 9 piece or 12 piece omakase ($90 versus $120 ) and then you can add additional plates. There is a vegetarian $70 option (prices as of November 2024) Everything was great The staff was friendly The flavors and mixing of ingredients was superb And of course the freshest ingredients Small and intimate atmosphere We will be back!
We opted for the "Oki" omakase--a 12 course spread including oyster, salad, various nigiris, a hand roll, and dessert--needless to say Chisai lived up to the the hype in SF's competitive omakase scene with their intricate craftsmanship that this spot is known for. The meal started on a slightly uneven note: a crab salad arrived with an aroma that my friend described as "fishy," and its dish carried a faint "soap-like" scent. However, these moments were exceptions in an otherwise beautifully curated menu. But Each piece of nigiri was thoughtfully prepared, balancing precision and creativity. The fish was perfectly seasoned, with its temperature and texture hitting all the right notes. Each piece brought a unique flavor profile and a new experience with every bite. That said, the final flight felt overly ambitious-- a scallop nigiri topped with truffle soy, caviar, and foie gras, while luxurious, all the toppings overshadowed the delicate flavor of the scallop. The texture was undeniably indulgent, but imo more simplicity would make the scallop shine even more. The restaurant itself is small with limited seating, but the the intimate environment adds to its allure, with an air of exclusivity while still being approachable. At $110 for the Oki menu, the experience felt aligned with the price point, though the occasional misstep suggested that a little restraint would further elevate an already excellent offering.
Though the name is Chisai (small), this restaurant was an oki (big) way to celebrate a special occasion! My companion surprised me by taking me to Chisai for an unforgettable omakase experience. Like the namesake, chisai means small, and this restaurant is small. The cozy interior creates a more busy feeling, and sound travels quickly. The dim and dark decor didn't give off a typical Japanese omakase ambiance; it's more like you're at someone's house in the city. It's a more Americanized look and feel. Service was top-notch. Our sushi chef was fast and flawless, and we enjoyed chitchatting with him. The service by waitstaff was excellent--plates cleared and water refilled. Omakase is what it's all about! They have three options: chisai (small), oki (big), and yasai (veggie). There are also options to add supplements. My companion and I both got the Oki, which we highly recommend. Along with 12 pieces of nigiri, all chosen by the sushi chef, we also got temaki, dessert, salad, and appetizers. They noted that my dietary restrictions and accommodations were considerate and didn't taint the flavor or taste of any dish. There's a fusion take on the experience, so keep that in mind. Almost every piece was phenomenal and executed exceptionally. My top had to be the Salmon, Black Cod, and Tuna Nigiris. Each nigiri was well portioned with an excellent rice-to-fish ratio, the fish was fresh and buttery, and the accompaniments were a great pairing. My companion and I also chose to share a Uni Ikura bowl; after mixing it, it was creamy, briny, and umami. Our ending dish, dessert, was so good. The vegan coconut and cardamom ice cream has me dreaming to this day, and my companion's ice cream is super cute. I wish we had more room in our stomachs to try more! After two hours, we were so full yet so happy. I highly recommend Chisai Sushi Club to those who like omakase or want a casual yet unique experience. It's located in Bernal Heights, and parking is limited to the street. I'm grateful to my companion for taking us out, and I recommend it to all city locals!
